Settela

The 9-year-old dutch Sinti-girl Anna Maria ‘Settela’ Steinbach peeks outside , at the last moment just before the sliding door is closed , standing inside a freight wagon with 74 people on May 19 , 1944 in the Westerbork concentration camp in Holland , when this deportation train leaves for Auschwitz-Birkenau – where Settela is murdered a few months later in one of the gas chambers. Here she wears a headscarf made from a torn sheet, because the Nazis had her head shaved , and while Settela peeks outside , her mother cries behind her in the car : “Get out of there, or soon your head gets in between!”
She was filmed by the jewish prisoner filmmaker Rudolf Breslauer as part of a documentary film being made on the Westerbork camp. More info here http://romasinti.eu/#story/settela-steinbach

① memo 20170719 ~ Amersfoort Camp to Station ~ Filming at the Amersfoort central station (sep 2013) a lenticular print made by David Galjaard ( davidgaljaard.nl ) on the route prisoners of the Germans Oct 11, 1944 had to walk from the Nazi concentration camp in Amersfoort (Kamp Amersfoort) to that railway station. History One Minutes In Paradiso

November 28, 2010 (tonight 6 years ago) the Dutch Museum of National History and The One Minutes presented a selection of videos about Dutch History (and personal history of dutch) at the festival “Waar Geschiedenis Begint” (Where history starts) in Paradiso, Amsterdam.

Artists and art students were asked to make a one minute video about where history starts. Special host is artist and theater director Steven de Jong.

How a young boy escaped Auschwitz horror

A new opera tells the story of how 11-year-old Simon Gronowski escaped incarceration in Auschwitz in 1943, after being pushed from the train transporting the family to the camp by his mother.

The media collection of Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies acquired this month – July 2016 – the DVDs of two of our documentary films :

1) The 2016 film of the premiere play “Celui Qui M’A Rendu Mon Âme” – the French-spoken adaptation of the play “Who returned my soul… “ originally by Kelly D. Brock – that retells the stories of 10 holocaust survivors – now by students of the Saint-Sépulcre school in Liege , Belgium (Philippe Renette – Centre Scolaire S2J.eu / Michel van der Burg – michelvanderburg.com). 2) The 2012 documentary “Transport XX to Auschwitz” – a film by Karen Lynne & Richard Bloom and Michel van der Burg. The attack on this 20th deportation train in Belgium – by three young men – the rescue, and the many escapes and escape attemps are documented in this film by the first-hand accounts of one of the attackers, people that jumped from the train and survivors who returned from Auschwitz.
