Yad Vashem recognized Nelly as Righteous Among the Nations on December 30, 1998, and honored her posthumously in 1999 with the Righteous title and medal.

Background

Belgian Resistance fighter Nelly Quintart has been hiding the Jewish Frankenthal family — Esther, Adolphe, and daughter Sally Frankenthal — at her place, 13 Rue Marie-Thérèse in Brussels, from September 1942 until the liberation in 1944.

Installation stolperstein Sally Frankenthal, 11-13 Rue Marie-Thérèse, Brussels, 11 April 2025.
Sally Frankenthal recommended to Yad Vashem in the late 1990s the ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ medal for ‘Nelly Quintard’, which Nelly received posthumously. The surname ‘Quintart’ was misspelled as ‘Quintard’ in Sally’s correspondence with Yad Vashem.

Together, the families of Sally Frankenthal and Nelly Quintart and researcher, filmmaker Michel van der Burg took the initiative June 2023 for this Stolperstein, a tribute to Sally Frankelthal, to recall passers-by to this story of Sally & Nelly, in front of the place where the house where Nelly Quintart hid the Frankenthal family used to stand – now a large new building at 11-13 Rue Marie-Thérèse in Brussels.

April 11, 2025 this beautiful and moving Stolperstein ceremony took place with music by André Reinitz on accordion, thanks to the Association pour la Mémoire de la Shoah joining our initiative July 2023 and making it happen, especially Marcel Zalc (president) and Bella Swiatlowski, coordinator Stolpersteine. Thank you municipal workers for placing this stolperstein. Film by Michel van der Burg | Miracles•Media.

The story of Sally & Nelly is now integrated into the largest decentralized memorial in the world, thanks to the artist Gunter Demnig and his team…hand-stamping each letter into the brass of this stone.

NL Transcript (added Sep 14th)

Welkom.

Welcome.
We are going to show the film QUATRE-MAINS.
That is a film I made together with co-director Simon Demeulemeester.
Simon is a journalist for the Knack [ Belgian (Flemish) weekly news magazine ].
He came to me with a very remarkable story, I thought.
The story of Koenraad Tinel and Simon Gronowski.
Both were young lads, back in World War II…
and of very different origins, experienced the war.
And testify about that today, about the special friendship.
… To purify the film as much as possible,
because the story called for it.
To actually tell it as simple, and pure as possible.
Decide for yourself whether it worked or not.
Now let’s watch the movie.
QUATRE – MAINS
And they go around with their story a lot too…
to lectures, to schools…
Koenraad as an artist.
Well, there’s also a book coming, in the fall.
That’s actually why we made this film.
That will come in the fall of 2022.
[ Audience ] Who wrote that then?
By Simon Demeulemeester, who also helped with the film.
[ Audience ] Ah ! That [journalist] from Knack, yes.
From Knack, yes.
[ Belgian (Flemish) weekly news magazine ]
The film is already being shown at festivals in America.
[ Audience ] You already got a prize, don’t you!
In France it has become the best European film.
[ Best European Independent Film 2021 at the ÉCU festival ]
But not yet [screened] in Belgium.
It is distributed by Dalton Distribution…
and the intention is that we release it together with the book.

Jewish Kid Monument | 20210223

Jewish Kid Monument ~
Walking today along the Maas River in Rotterdam , I bumped into this Jewish Children’s Monument, with the names I just learned of 686 Rotterdam’s Jewish children that were deported from here via the dutch transit camp Westerbork to the Nazi death camps Sobibór and Auschwitz-Birkenau of the Third Reich. In 2013 this special monument was unveiled for the murdered kids – only one girl survived – here near the former Loods 24 – the harbor warehouse number 24 , behind that still standing stone fence memorial (1992), were around 15000 Jews were gathered in 1942 and 1943 from Rotterdam city and nearby islands and sent on a journey to death.

Heroic Hands

① memo 20170427 ~ Heroic Hands ~ Friend , as you pass by , Honour these hands whose heroic gesture saved those whom the forces of evil had destined for hell .
This corten steel work of Etienne Desmet is a tribute to the heroic attack in Boortmeerbeek by the three young men Youra Livschitz, Robert Maistriau and Jean Franklemon , on the ‘Transport XX’ deportation train – a cattle car train crammed with 1631 Jewish passengers, heading for Auschwitz. They were able to open one of the cattle cars and liberated 17 men and women. Another more than 200 prisoners escape from the train before the German border. The story is told in the documentary film “Transport XX to Auschwitz” – https://michelvanderburg.com/2013/04/19/transport-xx-to-auschwitz/
Filmed last Sunday at the Transport XX commemoration April 23 , 2017 in Boortmeerbeek , Belgium

Sculptor’s Monument Transport XX

Sculptor Koenraad Tinel looks at the corten steel work of Etienne Desmet – the Transport XX monument in Boortmeerbeek , Belgium, during the commemoration April 27, 2014. Both Belgian visual artists were born in Ghent.

The sculpture commemorates the heroic attack in Boortmeerbeek April 19, 1943 on the deportation train ‘Transport XX’ – a cattle car train crammed with 1631 Jewish passengers, heading for Auschwitz – by three young men from Brussels – Youra Livschitz, Robert Maistriau and Jean Franklemon – who succeeded in opening one of the cars and liberate 17 people.
