Spuren | Traces ~ Valérie & Michel Claverie
Book presentation.
En – Traces … The death march of the inmates of Sachsenhausen concentration camp. French and German bilingual edition.
In the spring of 1945, when the Red Army approached Berlin, Himmler ordered to “evacuate” around 30,000 prisoners from the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The first death march leaves the camp on the night of April 20-21, 1945. Without water and food, weakened by captivity, thousands of prisoners die in the woods and on the streets of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg, the weakest are shot by the SS . About a third of all victims of the concentration camps died in the months before the liberation.
In 2015, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation, Valérie and Michel Claverie decided to follow the prisoner’s number 66213 path from Sachsenhausen to Crivitz, where he once found freedom again. From this memorial march a diary of a journey was created, which illustrates the testimonies of the last survivors with photographs and drawings. (Translation presented by Michel van der Burg , based on the german text).
FR – Traces …
