Islet Transplantation LUMC News Surprise • @1MEMO 20251020

Diabetic (dutch ‘Suikerzieke) … Parool, 6 Jan 1990 • @1MEMO 20251020

Big surprise today , to encounter this nice news article by journalist Rob van Dijk reporting on our pancreatic islet transplantation breakthrough in the Leiden University Hospital (now LUMC) in the Amsterdam based Dutch national newspaper Parool , Saturday 6 January 1990 (1).

I was searching actually for a better copy of a different news article I have archived on my clinical islet transplantation work (Newspaper Volkskrant 10 April 1999) in the Delpher archive of the National Library of the Netherlands , scrolling the search results, and noticed this Parool article – I didn’t know it existed 😉

Journalist Rob van Dijk did not interview me for the Parool, so I assume his source was the interview I gave for publication in Cicero, the biweekly LUMC publication, and the Dutch newspaper ‘Leidsch Dagblad’, and posted a year ago (2).

The articles reports (my translation from dutch*) :

Transplantation

Islet transplantation has been possible for a few years now, but it doesn’t (yet?) work in humans. The technique itself isn’t that complicated: as many islets of Langerhans as possible are extracted from a pancreas, injected into the diabetic patient’s liver or spleen, and thus, start producing insulin. However, that “thus” is still a bit tricky… …
The major problems lie in the fact that the yield of properly functioning islets is too small (at least 30 percent of the islets must be obtained undamaged to achieve sufficient insulin production after a transplant) and that the suspensions are too impure. Nevertheless, progress is being made.
The best news comes from Leiden University Hospital. There, biologist M. van der Burg, MSc has developed a method to isolate a very high and pure yield of islets from a dog’s pancreas. Van der Burg succeeded in isolating 40 percent of the vital islets from a dog’s pancreas. Through special processing, he was able to completely purify these cell clumps of 90 percent of excess and complicating pancreatic tissue. These islets were injected into the spleen of the same dog, where they produced sufficient insulin. This initial experiment has since been repeated in Leiden with several dogs with the same success. However, major challenges remain, not the least of which is the rejection problem. The Leiden experiments used the dog’s own tissue. The big question remains how the human immune system reacts when islets from a donor are injected.

*NL (dutch) quote :

Transplantatie

Nazi Street Propaganda • 20250622

Propaganda on the windows of the shop ‘Goedkoope Winkel’ (Cheap Shop) at Lange Elisabethstraat 2 in Utrecht, Holland, photographed by Wim Bruschwiler , ca 1943.

Nazi anti-semitic slogan ‘JOOD’ (Jew) on one window.

On the other window, the “V” symbol — standing for the English (Anti-Nazi) “Victory” slogan or the later Nazi edition “Victorie”.

On top of that window on the left a small pamphlet showing O…Z…O – W… – V…V – … … … … .

OZO originally was the anti-Nazi slogan ‘Oranje Zal Overwinnen’ (transl. : Holland Will Win). Here probably the Nazi version of OZO was posted (compare image in Notes 1) :

Orde Zal Overwinnen – Want – V=Victorie – Duitschland Wint Voor Europa! .

Translation :
Order Will Win – Because – V=Victory – Germany Wins For Europe!

Lost in Transition • @1MEMO 20250509

Jun 21, 2007, I started pioneering at YouTube, creating Channel012.
The first YouTube video ‘Fire Breather’ was shot at a 4:3 aspect ratio (640×480 pixels) and produced at a 16:9 aspect ratio with black bars for my first YouTube upload on Dec 30, 2007.

Unlisted ‘Fire Breather • 2nd Edition’

Next a 2nd edition of ‘Fire Breather’ was produced at the original 4:3 aspect ratio, and uploaded the next month, Jan 18, 2008.
YouTube displayed that 2nd edition at a higher quality. Sometime later though I decided to change visibility of that 2nd edition to ‘unlisted’ in order to preserve and favor the 1st edition views count.

Lost Forgotten Film

More recently that forgotten unlisted 2nd edition video appeared to be lost somehow…until I learned today that YouTube had changed visibility in 2021 of all unlisted videos uploaded before 2017 to ‘private’ automatically for security reasons with a worldwide system change.

Today I changed visibility at YouTube of that 2nd edition (video shown above) to public.

Discoveries Deportation Westerbork Film • 20250224

Discoveries Deportation Westerbork Film • 20250224 • The boy, the man, and the woman selected in this edited still of the linked video clip (15 s) URL https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxBw3eso6Bi3vIaR25h_bDWRHSx5EfMylN

Utrecht family identification , almost complete…

Almost certainly, three Jewish people have been recognized in the unique Westerbork film from 1944 (1). This time it concerns the 9-year-old boy Israël Wijnschenk, his father Max Wijnschenk, and his grandmother Betje Kokernoot-van Furth, who all lived in Utrecht (Holland).

Last week, the Dutch public broadcaster NOS (2) reported the news from the Utrecht (Dutch) news site Nieuws030 (3) that it is very likely that three people were recognized again in this film made by the Jewish prisoner and filmmaker Rudolf Breslauer showing the deportation of Jews, Roma and Sinti by train in Camp Westerbork on May 19, 1944.

Image researcher Koen Hulsbos — who previously identified an Amsterdam couple in this deportation train (4) — thought he recognized the young Israël Wijnschenk, a pupil at the time of the Joodse (Jewish) School Utrecht, and presented this to Victor Frederik, researcher of the Joodse School (5,6). The boy, the man, and the woman seem to belong together, and were recognized from family photos, also by family members.

It is certain that Max and his wife Chel (not in the images) returned to Utrecht after the war, their children Israël and his sister Kitty were murdered. Grandma Betje was also gassed in Auschwitz.

A portrait of Israël Wijnschenk is shown at the site of Joods Monument (7).

According to the transport list, there were two other children in that wagon, Joseph Beugeltas (11 years old) and Manfred Studzinsky (7 years old). Joseph Beugeltas appeared to have blond hair, and could not have been it (6). To be completely sure, the researchers are still looking for a photo of Manfred Studzinsky, for comparison…

Killer Windmill • @1MEMO 20250216

The story of my great-great grandmother killed by the spinning sails of her windmill , the Middle Mill in Stompwijk, Holland.

My great-great grandmother, Petronella van Dorp, was killed June 9, 1881, by the Middle Mill of these Three Windmills of Stompwijk. A row of windmills built in 1672 to drain water out of the Driemans polder in Stompwijk, Holland.

She was feeding the chickens, when the wind turned the windmill sails that grabbed her skirts and killed her, on June 9, 1881.

She was a miller’s wife — a widow at the time — of Leendert (Leonardus) van der Burg, my great-great grandfather.
Her eldest son Albert (my great-grandfather), a water miller too, and a former Papal Zouave (see below), reported her death the next day at the village town hall in Stompwijk.

Albert must have lost his Dutch citizenship after he had taken up ‘military service with a foreign power’, as a 16 year old boy, joining the Papal Zouaves from February 5, 1868 until 1870.
That might have had consequences for work as a water miller. He married in 1883 and appears to have lived a few years in Vlaardingen (near Rotterdam) – where my grandfather Machiel was born – before returning to Stompwijk with his wife Johanna van der Togt.

Albert’s brother, Pieter van der Burg, married May 8, 1882 with Magdalena de Bruin — a year after the fatal accident of his mother — and was a water miller on this Middle Mill (Middelmolen) in the Driemans polder in Stompwijk until 1892.
