TRANSPORT XX — Installation Brussels

February 28th, 2009, Brussels — my first encounter with the TRANSPORT XX installation in Brussels, that presented 1200 photographic portraits of Jews deported from Malines (Belgium) to Auschwitz in 1943. Turning point in my life. Two months later – April 19, 2009 – the film was published.

… This is Isabella Weinreb Castegnier. She is my great-grandmother. On April 19th, 1943, pregnant with my grandmother, she jumped out of a moving train headed to Auschwitz. She was being sent to her death, simply because she was a Jew. She understood that it was now or never, die at the destination or die trying, so she jumped. In the years to follow this epic jump, the Abbeys of Brussels became a place of hiding, survival, and safety for them time and time again.”

A virtual performance, during the April 2020 Corona virus lockdown, of the epilogue of the community opera PUSH , entitled : Ma Vie N’est Que Miracles | My life is only miracles – hosted by composer Howard Moody. It premiered on the night of the 19th April 2020, exactly 77 years after three Brussels resistance heroes stopped the Nazi train Transport XX, transporting 1600 Jewish deportees to Auschwitz, and more than 200 prisoners escaped from the train before the German border. After starting working together online from 2014 on the documentary Viviane’s Story (see e-book on Miracles.Media) now a live meetup in Brussels with Viviane, April 17th 2023, near the Church of Saint Catherine, for several commemoration events on Transport XX to Auschwitz, the deportation train leaving Mechelen 80 years ago, the unique attack, other resistance acts, the rescue, and escapes of over 200 people jumping from that deportation train in the night of April 19th-20th in 1943 – including Isabella Weinreb, pregnant 3 months with Viviane , who was born 6 months later.

Youra (Georges) Livschitz (1917-1944) pastel portrait, Brussels ca. 1933. Youra together with Robert Maistriau and Jean Franklemon, attacked the 20th convoy on 19 April 1943, freeing 17 deportees, a unique event in occupied Europe. Filmed April 19, 2023 in the Jewish Museum of Belgium, in Brussels, at the exhibition ‘236 – Land(es)capes from the 20th convoy’ (Invent 03399).
