Ashes Pond

Ashes Pond
An unforgettable moment for me that ‘touching the ash pond’ I filmed in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, were I was filming Simon Gronowski and Koenraad Tinel, May 2012, for the upcoming documentary film Miracles.
Into this pond were dumped the ashes of the people, who were murdered (gassed) and burned at the nearby crematorium.
Sharing this moment today for International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camps. Courtesy of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim, Poland. Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau Camp in Poland, May 24th 2012.

Sjabbos | Friday Night (1932) avant garde film documentary made by dutch filmmaker Jan Teunissen (G.J. Teunissen) on the Amsterdam Jewish Quarter when sabbath starts.
It’s the first film presented by the dutch jewish film producer Loet C. Barnstijn – and as and artistic documentary , different from his later films. Sound by Polygoon Haarlem and Tobis-Klangfilm, Studios Éclair Paris-Èpinay-sur-Seine.

Pre-war Amsterdam’s Jewish quarter at the start of the shabbat: street life with shops and market, the Zuidertoren tower strikes 4 o’clock and the sabbath starts. The shops are closing, businesses are being shut down, employees are rushing home.
While the women at home put the finishing touches to the meal, carefully set the table and light the candles, the men hurry to the synagogue. Chazan Blanes enters the Snoge (Portuguese Synagogue) through the side gate, cantor Maroko greets the shabbat in the Grote Synagoge (Great Synagogue).

Jan Teunissen joined the National Socialist Movement in the Netherlands in 1940, benefactor member of the dutch SS in 1941 and head of the Filmgilde – the film section of the dutch ‘Kultuurkamer’ – the NS propaganda organisation in Holland during WW2.
Fragments of this film where used in 1941 in the dutch version of the Nazi antisemitic propaganda film “The eternal Jew”.
After the war Jan Teunissen was detained 3 years and subsequently prohibited from working in the Dutch film industry for ten years.

The chanson “Libérés” (Author: Béatrice Dethy – Music and performance: Didier Jans – Arrangement: Mathieu Caseau) will be part of the album “Remettre à zéro les compteurs” expected for release very soon by Didier Jans – site http://www.didierjans.com

LIBÉRÉS Paroles ( Béatrice Dethy, le 30/10/2018 )

Lui sauta du vingtième convoi
Menant par les rails de l’enfer
Sa mère, puis sa sœur, loin là-bas,
Dans le brasier des hommes d’Hitler.

Les nazis lui ont pris les siens,
Voulaient faire de lui un paria.
Il défendra les droits humains,
Au nom des siens sera papa.

L’autre, trop jeune pour adopter
La vision traître de son père,
Verra ses deux frères s’engager
Sous les drapeaux des tortionnaires.

Très petit, il dessinera,
Emprisonné dans son silence.
La sculpture le sauvera
Du fardeau de cette déchéance.

Ces enfants de 8 et 6 ans,
Détruits, piétinés par la guerre,
Ont dû affronter leurs tourments
Et la terreur, en solitaire.
Leur vie durant, ils ont traîné
La violence de leur enfance.
Avec les stigmates tatoués
Dans leurs jeunes mémoires innocentes,
Grands-pères, ils se sont rencontrés
Au carrefour de leurs souffrances.
Leur passé les a reliés
Et allié leurs différences.

Non, jamais ils n’avaient cessé
De remettre tout en question,
D’interroger les faits passés,
Les génocides et leurs raisons.

Que seraient-ils donc devenus,
Quels bourreaux ou quels résistants,
S’ils avaient tous les deux reçu
Un héritage bien différent ?

Ils voulaient vaincre l’ignorance,
Cherchaient à ouvrir leur esprit ;

A dessiné d’autres projets
Changeant la vengeance et la haine
En message d’amour et de paix.

EN : Transport XX to Auschwitz – Thursday, 22.5.2014, 17:45 – Cinema Tuškanac
During the Shoah, the Nazis, in their quest for the final solution of the Jewish question, utilized thousands of trains from Germany and the occupied countries to transport 3,000,000 Jews to the concentration and death camps. This is the little known, true story of a most remarkable and heroic rescue attempt which occurred on April 19, 1943, the first night of the Passover, at the same time that the Warsaw Ghetto uprising began, some 720 miles away. On that night, Transport XX departed Mechelen, Belgium at 10 p. m. with 1631 Jewish men, women and children for Auschwitz- Birkenau. Half an hour later, it was stopped by three young Belgians armed with only 1 pistol, pliers and a hurricane lamp. This was the only documented rescue attempt/attack on a death train during the Shoah.
