Artist Talk Gerald van der Kaap’s Beyond Index

Artist Talk Gerald van der Kaap’s Beyond Index
One minute aftermovie of the inspiring intimate tour of the solo exhibition Beyond Index by Gerald van der Kaap screening in the new ROZENSTRAAT art project space hosted by Sjoerd Kloosterhuis , last Tuesday 7 January, during the artist talk of Gerald van der Kaap with film critic Dana Linssen in this six screen installation.
Installation audio was muted during the talk , however audio from a clip taken after the talk is included in this one minute film of my impressions.
Gerald van der Kaap’s original feature film Beyond Index premiered in 2017 and formed the starting point of the 6 channel multimedia remix installation that Kaap developed for his exhibition at Rozenstraat. This is Gerald Van Der Kaap’s first feature – an experimental film made in China in collaboration with cinematographers Yu LIK-WAI and Joewiii – with a soundtrack by Berlin producer duo ÂME.

Rife with historical art references, Beyond Index (2017) follows a group of Chinese art students whose training comprises the precise imitation of classic paintings from the Western canon. This strict adherence to tradition shifts with the arrival of Yves Klein – both a character and a drug. Slowly intoxicated by Yves’ words and the mind-altering color blue, the students undergo an awakening and begin to consider an alternative, less polluted, reality. In an age which often measures art in terms of capitalist productivity, it is vestigated whether art has the power to undermine or destabilize capitalist neoliberal regimes.
