Settela peeks outside the death train to Auschwitz.
Last glance at the outside world for the 9-year-old Dutch Sinti girl Settela Steinbach just before these cattle car doors close , and this death train heads for Auschwitz on May 19 , 1944.
Anna Maria ‘Settela’ Steinbach peeks outside , at the last moment just before the sliding door is closed , standing inside a freight wagon with 74 people on May 19 , 1944 in the Westerbork concentration camp in Holland (75 people the moment the train leaves), when this deportation train leaves for Auschwitz-Birkenau – where Settela is murdered a few months later in one of the gas chambers.
Here she wears a headscarf made from a torn sheet, because the Nazis had her head shaved , and while Settela peeks outside , her mother cries behind her in the car : “Get out of there, or soon your head gets in between!”
She was filmed by the Jewish prisoner filmmaker Rudolf Breslauer as part of a documentary film being made on the Westerbork camp.
In 2017 I made two other short films of this moment (20170721 and 20170725 michelvanderburg•com).
Today 75 years later, on the occasion of the opening of the site Settela.com this new 1 minute slow-motion film (4:3 format) using the original Westerbork 1944 film rushes of Rudolf Breslauer from the archive of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Open Images).

Tony

Today I learned about Tony Edelstein, when I started reading again in the autobiography ‘Cello met één snaar’ (Cello with one string) of the well known dutch comedian , stage artist, Abraham Bueno de Mesquita – whose comic talents saved his life. Bueno’s ability to even play a one string cello combined with his mimical talents saved him from deportation from the Dossin Barracks (Kazerne Dossin) in Mechelen, Belgium , when the camp commander was looking for musicians. He remained imprisoned for 2 years , working in Kazerne Dossin. His wife Tony , however , was deported right away but escaped from that 20th death train (Transport XX) to Auschwitz – together with her twin sister Adela – near St. Truiden , where she survived the war working for a local general practitioner. Later today , after more research , I recognized Tony (3rd row last portrait on the right) and Adela (2nd row from top , 2nd portrait counting from right to left) on the billboards with passport photos (from the State Archives, Brussels) of the people that escaped from Transport XX – filmed last month following the commemoration of the attack on Transport XX in Boortmeerbeek , Belgium. ① memo 20180516 ~ Tony

Till Eulenspiegel

① memo 20171117 ~ Till Eulenspiegel ~ The Antwerp avant garde artist ‘Lon’ Leon Landau made a puppet theater for the children in the Kazerne Dossin transit camp , with 12 puppets like this marionette Till Eulenspiegel (Tijl Uilenspiegel) – and Robin Hood which I published previously [ https://michelvanderburg.com/2017/07/29/lons-puppet-show/ ] . However, Lon was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 , before the puppet show could took place. Filmed November 15, 2013 in Kazerne Dossin , Mechelen , Belgium.

Coming Soon … The Robert Clary Story

COMING SOON

A truly inspiring film about a Hollywood legend
FROM BUCHENWALD TO HOLLYWOOD , THE ROBERT CLARY STORY
A film by Karen and Richard Bloom and Michel van der Burg

Richard Bloom Productions is producing a new documentary about legendary actor, Broadway star, singer, artist, author and Holocaust lecturer, Robert Clary.
Mr. Clary is widely known for his role as Corporal Lebeau on the long running TV series Hogan’s Heroes.
What is little known by the public is that Robert’s real last name is Widerman, and in 1942 at the age of 16, he and twelve members of his family were rounded up in Paris, France and deported by the Nazis to concentration camps. He was the only one to survive, having endured 31 months in four Nazi camps and a death march until his liberation from Buchenwald by the U.S. Army on April 11, 1945.
He was discovered singing in a Paris nightclub in 1947, signed to a recording contract and brought to the United States in 1949 where he met Merv Griffin, who introduced him to Eddie and Ida Cantor and their daughter, Natalie, who he would later marry.
His inspiring story will be shared with the world in From Buchenwald to Hollywood, The Robert Clary Story, which is currently in post-production.

Lon’s Puppet Show

① memo 20170729 ~ Lon’s Puppet Show ~ The Antwerp avant garde artist ‘Lon’ Leon Landau made a puppet theater for the children in the Kazerne Dossin transit camp , with 12 puppets like this rebellious character ‘Robin Hood’ filmed here , and eg Till Eulenspiegel (Tijl Uilenspiegel) – but Lon was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 , before the puppet show could took place.
He was a rebel himself , one of the people that hid the tools under the straw on the floor of the cattle cars to help escape the deportees on Transport XX. Interview with Janiv Stamberger ( researcher Kazerne Dossin ) filmed August 18, 2016 at the Wiki Loves Art event in Kazerne Dossin , Mechelen , Belgium.
