Poster (1) presented at the 3rd International Congress on Pancreatic and Islet Transplantation, Symposium on Artificial Insulin Delivery System, Lyon (France) June 6–8, 1991.
The poster was originally designed and produced on a Macintosh computer and Imagewriter dotmatrix printer, June 3, 1991, using the MacDraw II application, with graphs from Cricket Graph. That 1991 Mac file was remastered today in LibreOffice Vanilla.

Following first introduction of the use UWS (the UW organ preservation solution) for pancreatic islet isolation in 1989 , next also purification of the islets in UWS was presented in 1991, with two options.
One option was an iso-osmotic density gradient solution of Percoll in UWS. The second option was a density gradient solution created by increasing the Pentastarch concentration in UWS (7) . Note that Pentastarch is a component of UWS.
The Percoll-UWS poster was posted recently (8)
Here the remastered poster presentation on Pentastarch-UWS :
Pentastarch in UW (SUW): a new method for complete islet purification. 3rd International Congress on Pancreatic and Islet Transplantation, Symposium on Artificial Insulin Delivery System, Lyon (France) June 6–8, 1991.
The poster was designed and produced on my personal Macintosh computer and Imagewriter dotmatrix printer, the night of June 3-4, 1991, using the MacDraw II application.
The Apple Imagewriter-II matrix printer, allows printing landscape across a chain of several sheets of paper, strips, the width of the poster (here 3 sheets long). The strips of the poster (here 3 strips) were then glued on site along the perforation, creating the 36/24 inch poster.
Finally the photo print of the purified islets was pasted in the poster at the spot at the venue in Lyon. In Lyon a photo of a dithizone stained Pentastarch purified islet sample was shown. To save time the archive was not searched for that image, and another image of Pentastarch purified islets was inserted in this remastered edition, a reflection contrast micrograph of an ultrathin section of Pentastarch purified islets immuno-stained with gold on insulin in the islet cells.
Nowadays, it is a challenge opening such old Mac files … Luckily, I was able to open this MacDraw II poster file in LibreOffice Vanilla and now learned to use the app to further correct most conversion issues. Pixelmator Pro was used for additional ‘repair’ and insertion of the photo scan.

7. Pentastarch is the synthetic colloid component of UWS (ViaSpan / Belzer solution), a purified fraction (250 kD) of hydroxyethyl starch. Pentastarch powder was used here to increase the Pentastarch concentration and density of the UWS.

Nowadays, it is a challenge opening such old Mac files … Luckily, I was able to open this MacDraw II poster file in LibreOffice Vanilla (open source app) with nice results. Only minor issues appeared with text spacing of the top row of the table , and the caption in the photo section. Some color is showing in the graphs , not evident on my grayscale equipment in the 90s. …. The poster image of 20240731 has been replaced by a remastered image , see Note Update 20240808 below.

Following the first publication here last month (20240731) of the original 1991 MacDraw poster opened (converted) in LibreOffice Vanilla (1), I learned how to do some editing in the LibreOffice app to further restore poster layout details such as line spacing, and font style. An archive photo of another poster presentation in Pittsburgh in 1992 (that will be posted here soon) guided this restoration.
Current workflow : 1) opening the MacDraw II file in LibreOffice Vanilla 2) editing in in LibreOffice Vanilla , saving as LibreOffice Vanilla file (OpenDocument Drawing – extension odg). 3) opening the photo tiff image in the Mac’s Preview app, and copying the displayed image to the clipboard 4) pasting the clipboard image in the LibreOffice doc , and dragging to adjust size and location 5) exporting the file as PDF (image resolution 300 DPI ; PDF/A-1b ; PDF/UA). 6) Converting the PDF in the Preview app to TIFF 144 pixels/inch. 7) Adding caption , metadata etc with JPEG conversion in PhotoMill.
This 20240731 post now has this updated 20240808 – poster image.

Silent film — Towards the end of World War I – in the summer 1918 , after the Allies defeated the Germans in the Second Battle of the Marne – large groups of Belgians and French refugees flee in front of the retreating enemy force to the neutral Netherlands.
The Dutch army and Red Cross prepared to receive a possible 100,000 evacuees in the border towns in the south of the Netherlands.
After wandering weeks in the north of France , and next crossing Belgium on foot, the first group of French refugees arrived at the Dutch border October 20, completely exhausted.
At the gate in the electric wire fence at the border to the Netherlands – the so-called ‘Death Wire’ (dutch : Dodendraad ) Dutch soldiers took them over from German escorts.
Some refugees had travelled by tram part of the route crossing Belgium to the belgian border town Molenbeersel.
At the dutch border the refugees were welcomed and ladies from relief committees provide the refugees with food and drinks on the road to Stramproy in the Netherlands.
Within days , thousands of French refugees arrive in the village of Stramproy and are transferred to the city of Weert .
On arrival in the city center of Weert the dutch army registered people and handed out soup and bread.
The weak, the sick, and maternity women were cared for by the Red Cross and taken to an aid post for further care.
The refugees were sheltered the night in buildings like convents and schools in Weert, before being housed elsewhere in the country the following days.
