Following first introduction of the use of UWS (the UW organ preservation solution) for pancreatic islet isolation in 1989 , next also purification of the islets in UWS was presented in 1991, with two options.
One option was an iso-osmotic density gradient solution of Percoll in UWS. The second option was a density gradient solution created by increasing the Pentastarch concentration in UWS . Note that Pentastarch is a component of UWS.

The poster was designed and produced on my personal Macintosh computer and Imagewriter dotmatrix printer, the night of June 3-4, 1991, using the MacDraw II application, inserted with a bar graph prepared in the Cricket Graph app.
The Apple Imagewriter-II matrix printer, allows printing landscape across a chain of several sheets of paper, strips, the width of the poster (here 3 sheets long). The strips of the poster (here 5 strips) were then glued on site along the perforation, creating a 36/41 inch poster.
Finally the RCM photo print of the purified human islets was pasted in the poster at the spot at the venue in Lyon.

Nowadays, it is a challenge opening such old Mac files … Luckily, I was able to open this MacDraw II poster file in LibreOffice Vanilla (open source app) with nice results. Only minor issues appeared with text spacing of the top row of the table , and the caption in the photo section. Some color is showing in the graphs , not evident on my grayscale equipment in the 90s. …. The poster image of 20240731 has been replaced by a remastered image , see Note Update 20240808 below.

Update 20240808

Remastered poster ‘Lyon 1991 Percoll Poster | 20240731 • 20240808’

Following the first publication here last month (20240731) of the original 1991 MacDraw poster opened (converted) in LibreOffice Vanilla (1), I learned how to do some editing in the LibreOffice app to further restore poster layout details such as line spacing, and font style. An archive photo of another poster presentation in Pittsburgh in 1992 (that will be posted here soon) guided this restoration.

Current workflow :
1) opening the MacDraw II file in LibreOffice Vanilla
2) editing in in LibreOffice Vanilla , saving as LibreOffice Vanilla file (OpenDocument Drawing – extension odg).
3) opening the photo tiff image in the Mac’s Preview app, and copying the displayed image to the clipboard
4) pasting the clipboard image in the LibreOffice doc , and dragging to adjust size and location
5) exporting the file as PDF (image resolution 300 DPI ; PDF/A-1b ; PDF/UA).
6) Converting the PDF in the Preview app to TIFF 144 pixels/inch.
7) Adding caption , metadata etc with JPEG conversion in PhotoMill.

First Stolperstein | 20240520

First Stolperstein. Installed on 16 Dec 1992 in front of the City Hall in Cologne , Germany.

Over the past 30 years the team of German artist Gunter Demnig installed over 100,000 Stumbling Stones – ‘Stolpersteine’ – across 26 countries in Europe – the world’s largest memorial.

Demnig’s Stolpersteine are small, cobblestone-sized brass memorials for the victims of National Socialism. Set into the pavement of sidewalks in front of the buildings where Nazi victims once lived or worked, they call attention both to the individual victim and the scope of the Nazi war crimes.

The very first Stolperstein, was installed on 16 December 1992 in front of Cologne City Hall , with Heinrich Himmler’s order for the initiation of deportations of all Roma (Gypsies) :

„Auf Befehl des Reichsführers SS vom 16.12.42 – Tgb. Nr. I 2652/42 Ad./RF/V. – sind Zigeunermischlinge, Rom-Zigeuner und nicht deutschblütige Angehörige zigeunerischer Sippen balkanischer Herkunft nach bestimmten Richtlinien auszuwählen und in einer Aktion von wenigen Wochen in ein Konzentrationslager einzuweisen. Dieser Personenkreis wird im nachstehenden kurz als ‚zigeunerische Personen‘ bezeichnet. Die Einweisung erfolgt ohne Rücksicht auf den Mischlingsgrad familienweise in das Konzentrationslager (Zigeunerlager) Auschwitz.“

The visible caption on this photo here is ‘ANP’, the in Holland well known almost 100 year old press agency (similar to eg Reuters) distributing news to other professional media like newspapers and our national tv broadcaster .

Annoying … (knowing) you now need to check every news item image (photo/still) of the Dutch national news broadcaster NOS to find out whether that image really is a news photo or actually fake … just an illustration from some archive.

You need to click this image in the post to be able to read the small print additional caption, this is just an archive image (dutch: archiefbeeld) … no news.

I appreciate the excellent NOS public national news broadcaster in the Netherlands. And, using archive footage may help storytelling in documentary work. However, here, watching the NOS site on an iPad or desktop PC, it’s obvious the design of the site creates a problem , since posting a news item requires using at least one image. With no news photo available , the best alternative here appears to be using text for the featured image.

Else, best, show the notice ‘Archive image’ clearly visible at first glance in the post’s image… (?)

April 13, 2012. After mailing Marc Michiels (Coordinator commemoration Transport XX, Boortmeerbeek, Belgium) DVD-Video copes of the 1 minute film of Transport XX on Wednesday April 11 , 2012 , two days later (April 13) DVD copies of other editions were prepared for sending Marc – like DVD loop versions of the one minute film and a new 2012 edition Transport XX face <> face.

Screening of the 1 minute film was planned for Marc’s book presentation of Transport XX at the townhall of Boortmeerbeek , May 10, 2012 , with a short introduction by me, and the commemoration Sunday, May 13, 2012.

The loop versions were introduced for a continuous play option at the entrance of the photo exhibition ‘Our World, at War’ at HaBoBIB, Boortmeerbeek April 16 – May 31, 2012. The one minute film was chosen for screening there in a loop.

Marc Michiels – expert author on the history of Transport XX and coordinator for many years of the annual Transport XX commemorations in Boortmeerbeek, Belgium – unfortunately passed away April 2021 . Now — when searching for info on Robert Korten – Marc’s predecessor as the first coordinator and founder of the XXth convoy-commemorations – I was happy to to find Marc’s website is back online, now at the appropriate new domain : transportxxboortmeerbeek.be
