Bio
My name is Michel van der Burg (Michael legally), I am Dutch, officially retired, doing research, all my life, initially with an experimental and clinical biomedical career, and for the past more than 15 years now, working independently with a passion for video, as researcher, documentarian, multimedia maker, with a focus on educational documentary (short) films, and online publishing. I am working non-profit , freelance and in collaboration with other volunteers, internationally, and occasionally on a small scale (non-profit for me) with commercial partners, as well.
The documentary projects focus mostly on stories that emerged from the Holocaust…deportation in Belgium from the Kazerne Dossin transit camp in Mechelen, with Transport XX to Auschwitz, stories of the attack on this train, the escapes – with a longterm follow-up on Simon Gronowski, a boy when he jumped from Transport XX, and for many years now sharing his story…his life.
I have been doing this documentary work, ever since I accidentally came into contact with Transport XX – a photo installation in Brussels in February 2009 – and published the short film Transport XX – installation in Brussels. This work is being published online via michelvanderburg.com . For a first one hour documentary on Transport XX (2012), I started working together in 2010 with Richard Bloom and his wife Karen Lynne Bloom – the start of a continuous collaboration.
Blogging is at the 1-memo.com site. This one memo site functions also as a platform collecting my posts from the other sites I use – although such posts are not necessarily updated at 1-memo , the collection helps finding works.
The publication Settela•Com (ISSN 2949-9313) – short for Settela•Communications – was created to facilitate the online documentation and research of the Westerbork images, and documentation of the use of the Westerborkfilm in other works, as well as the context, World War II, and the destruction of diversity in general.
Now, all priority is given to the Miracles project – some 15 years of documenting the story of Simon Gronowski, of Transport XX, and his recent miraculous journey, friendship with Koenraad Tinel, a story constantly evolving . Over the years, some parts have been published. Currently Miracles.Media is being designed as the main platform for transmedia storytelling of the ‘Miracles’ project by sequentially publishing film, photography, text , audio, books…
